It certainly was the most glorious summer day for a wedding and despite the declining numbers of people getting married in New Zealand it's really affirming to know that marriage is still considered worthwhile and important by many.
Marriage
is the public and legal recognition of an established, working partnership between a couple who love one another above all
other and who are prepared to create a life together as Husband and Wife.
Marriage is when two people form a union of respect and trust. It is a symbol
of their love for one another and signifies a milestone in the progression of their
relationship. Many couples who get married today have already established strong and secure relationships; living together is no longer branded as 'living in sin' thankfully and couples choose to marry when they are ready, perhaps when they are more financially stable or when the children come along.
Whatever the reason couples couples today have choices. Choices of when and where to marry and how to celebrate their marriage be it with a religious or secular ceremony. Ceremonies are more personal now which allows for greater freedom of choice, especially with a civil ceremony.
Marriage, as well, is a reflection of a couple's histories, a celebration of the present moment, and a looking forward with
anticipation to their future together.
Oscar
Wilde wrote - “the smallest act of
kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” Personally, I believe that
kindness is one of the most important ingredients of any good relationship, especially marriage.
One of the reading that was read as a Marriage Blessing in one of the Marriage Ceremonies I took today was sound advice for any stable relationship or marriage. I have adapted it slightly to share with you.
As you begin your married life today and continue on your
Journey along the road of life together, the road will twist and turn
May you make the best of whatever comes your way.
May you continue to enjoy each other as you do now.
May you realise that no one is perfect and look for the good
May you realise that no one is perfect and look for the good
In all things and all people, including
yourselves.
May you respect each other's likes and dislikes, opinions and beliefs,
Hopes, dreams and fears, even though you may not always understand
them.
May you learn from each other and help each other to grow,
May you learn from each other and help each other to grow,
Emotionally and spiritually.
May you realise that there is design and purpose in your lives,
Whatever happens, hold on
to each other and know that things have May you realise that there is design and purpose in your lives,
A way of working out for the good
Create for your children a peaceful, stable home of love
as a foundation on which they can build their lives.
Create for your children a peaceful, stable home of love
as a foundation on which they can build their lives.
But most of all, keep lit the torch of love that you now share in your
hearts,
So that by your loving example you may pass on the light of love
to your children and grandchildren.
May your hearts always be
young and your dreams last forever
